Hudson Irwin – The Goals of a Young Gymnast
How did you get into gymnastics?
From the time I could walk, I would climb and jump over our furniture. Mum said that I would never sit still and she was worried that I would fall and hurt myself, so she gave me the opportunity to try gymnastics.
What do you love about it?
What I love about gymnastics is that I have the ability to learn new skills and keep on improving. I’m always striving for perfection and there is no real end to it because it can always be done better. The sport also gives me the opportunity to push myself and see how far I can get.
What has been your greatest achievement?
This year I was lucky enough to represent Australia at the Austrian Future Cup in Linz. It has been my biggest competition so far and was my first international event. I learnt heaps and had a great experience as it was my first time overseas as well.
What is your favourite and least favourite part of living in Melbourne?
In Melbourne my longer days can be a struggle, but doing what I enjoy and striving to do my best is the most enjoyable part. Training in Melbourne is great and I seem to be getting closer and closer to where I want to be.
What are some of your personal goals for the future?
My goals for the future are to represent Australia at the Commonwealth Games, World Championships, Olympic Games and to be successful on the international stage.
What is your favourite apparatus and why?
The floor exercise is definitely my most favourite apparatus and I feel that it is one of my stronger events. I enjoy building on my aerial awareness and tumbling on the sprung floor.
