Is sitting really killing us???
The Results Are In… Is Sitting Really Killing Us?
For those that missed it, there was an article recently in The Age newspaper that outlined a recent study showing us some recent evidence that sitting is slowly killing us.
In fact for every hour we spend sitting, we are shaving time off our lives – not to mention increasing stress on our muscles and joints if we are not sitting correctly!! But what can we do about it?
Well, firstly we should outline what the study found…
a) we lose 22 minutes of our life for every hour we spend sedentary.
b) getting up every hour and standing still for two minutes had NO benefit on our health.
c) However, getting up and doing light exercise such as easy walking, light gardening or cleaning was associated with a 33% lower risk of dying prematurely!!!
Just to point out, this does not take into account vigorous exercise and weight loss, as there is a great deal of new evidence showing us really short intense bouts of exercise for about four mins a day has great benefits for us in regards to weight loss, blood pressure, cholesterol etc. In the meantime, make sure you are getting up and moving every hour – even if it’s just for two minutes! You could be extending your life.. and your body will thank you for it.
